Race Suits
Race suits are full body suits designed to be worn by drivers during an auto race. They are designed to offer multiple forms of protection to a driver in the event of an accident. Firstly, the suits are flame retardant. This gives the driver valuable time to escape a burning vehicle after a crash; which can make the difference between walking away from an accident and spending months in the burn ward.
The second thing race suits are designed to do is be a barrier between the driver and the road if the driver is ejected. This means that they are padded and abrasion resistant. The second is especially critical. It doesn’t matter how well the suit is padded if it can’t stand up to a 100mph + impact with the pavement. That impact alone would kill an unsuited driver, regardless of what part of the body took the brunt of the force.
Between fire retardant and road rash preventing measures, it’s small wonder that racing suits are hot, and we’re not talking fashion. The most impressive measures taken in suit technology don’t lend themselves to preventing a driver from catching fire or being ground into sausage by the asphalt; although those are a suit’s most important functions. The technology goes into allowing a suit to do all that without cooking the driver alive during the race.
